Mr. Greenland, the culinary teacher, holds open houses and other events in the culinary room, to show that the Culinary Club contributes to the overall “harmony” of GHS, offering food prepared with care by students. With each event food is served constantly by student volunteers in the culinary room within the first few weeks of school. Volunteering adds to a student’s high school record as a catering experience, which shows that a student is well rounded and capable of expanding and growing in various areas.
Students can watch as their food is enjoyed by peers and the community during open house, which boosts one’s culinary confidence. Parents can see what their kids will be doing throughout the year while enjoying a tasty treat. This club meets every other Monday from 3 to 4:30 to cook whatever is needed for the next event or just for students learning experience and tasting. “ Open house is a chance for culinary students, and parents a chance to sample food done by students,” Mr. Greenland believes.
Students express a love for Mr. Greenland’s teaching style because he adds humor while maintaining a “hands-on learning experience”. Most students who join already have been in the class and can mentor students who have not so that Mr. Greenland can focus on the nitty gritty of cooking and perfecting dishes. “From cleaning, cooking, and serving”, Mr. Greenlands hope is for this club and the class to convince students to take the Safe Serve test, which is a 50-question test all about how to be safe in the kitchen, sent by the state organization of Safe Serve. It helps to be able to get a job quicker and show a real certificate of the growth of a student. “ In this club I have learned to prepare different kinds of dishes and make presentable plates.” Peyton Hartford explains
Students learn how to accurately measure ingredients and receive a perspective of a person who has based their life on teaching food safety and preparation to show them how to cook in an environment based to help them learn. Students may not get the chance to learn at home so this provides a place where they can. Other events students can participate in and experience are bake sales and fresh bread Fridays which Mr. Greenland states it is a “favorite”. Hartford explains how she likes “making food and seeing others enjoy it”, she hopes to achieve many dishes and put her Safe Serve Certificate from last year to use. “They should unless they’re just there to just be with friends and not pay attention.” Peyton Hartford expresses
