Mrs. O’Shea is an English nine Honors and Running Start College Composition teacher at Goffstown High School. In her free time she has taken on being the advisor for National Honor Society (NHS) while already being the co-advisor for the Freshman class. She took over NHS from Mr. Chadbourne, who was the previous advisor for over 10 years. The transition from him to Ms. O’Shea has been fairly smooth.
Mrs.O’Shea felt nervous at first and states she “has humongous shoes to fill” though she believes the transition wasn’t hard due to how well Mr. Chadbourne ran NHS. The biggest challenge Mrs. O’Shea faced was that she had no opportunity to practice before becoming the advisor which is what made her nervous. Mrs. O’Shea mentions that during the initial talks of her taking over, Meredith Winterburn- a GHS senior and president of NHS- reached out to offer any help she could. This gesture, though small, made the transition better.
In the past Mrs. O’Shea ran the Peer Outreach club as a co-advisor. This previous experience has helped her. She has seen “lots of different students in lots of different situations” and being exposed to all of it allows for her to think on her feet with anything that comes her way. As advisor, she takes on “the boring stuff so that they [the students in NHS] can be the faces of the organization.”
With the induction around the corner Mrs. O’Shea has been more hands-on recently. Forty-nine students will be inducted into NHS on January 16th. She has been active in the selection process and working with the faculty counsel to choose the inductees. Since becoming advisor, Mrs. O’Shea has made no changes and wants to advise the club as is ‘to see what works for [her], what works for the students” to then reflect from there to see if any changes do need to be made.
