The Culinary class at Goffstown high school bursts with new students each semester making it one of the most popular classes in the school.
The class focuses on career readiness in the culinary arts, and the basics of cooking. When asking Laura Wawrzyniak why she took the course, she states “I took the Culinary course because I enjoy cooking and baking at home. I also wanted to expand my skills within the kitchen.” Culinary teacher Mr. Greenland, believes the class is popular because of the instant feedback you acquire from cooking. He expresses “If you don’t do it correctly the food comes out either terrible or really good.”
In addition to the popular culinary class, there is also a creative foods course. Interviewee Laura Wawrzyniak mentions enjoying Culinary her freshman year and currently taking the Creative foods course during her Junior year. Mr. Greenland states the Creative foods class acts like an honors class to the prerequisite, culinary class. The creative foods course expands on the abilities already known from taking the prerequisite.
When compared to the middle school’s FACS class (family and consumer science), Greenland states the class is about 25% alike compared to the culinary course at the high school. That 25% is the cooking part of FACS class, which seems to be the part most students enjoy while taking the course at the middle school. Wawrzyniak also agrees with this statement adding “I would say that the FACS class briefly touches on the culinary arts, when the culinary classes are based only off of culinary arts.”
Mr. Greenland comes from a strong background of cooking. He used to manage a restaurant, then went on to substitute in schools. Mr. Greenland first started in Manchester as a para and then came to Goffstown as a para as well. When Goffstown High School’s culinary teacher retired, Greenland jumped into the spot. From this, he has had a great 22 years of teaching at Goffstown High School. Mr. Greenland’s final attribute to the interview was “Try to cook at home as much as you can, and watch people around you who know how to prepare foods.”
