On October 4th, 2023 the team played Londonderry in their first ever Mental Health Awareness Game. The gym was decorated in green and the girls were dressed in their new uniforms to support the cause. The national color for mental health is green so to decorate and show their love the team received personal uniforms with their name and number to keep. The volleyball team has put a lot of effort and funds into the mental health awareness cause, raising almost four thousand dollars for American Foundation of Suiside Prevention (AFSP) New Hampshire. As the impressive season progresses for the Goffstown girls volleyball season sitting at a record of 10-3 there next game is a special one.
The game itself was a fight to see with the girls going all the way to the 5th tie breaker set! In the end, the girls might not have won the game but they sent a small message about . John Webb, a past Goffstown volleyball coach and one of the school counselors shed some light on the concept of mental awareness.
“ We [Goffstown high school] are off to a great start,” “ but it needs to be something we just do,” stated Webb. He explained how the game was important but didn’t send a strong enough message at the end of the day. He believes that people need to be aware of resources, and aware of the support systems instead of just wearing the mental health colors. He added that the publicity was good but “ what else can we do? Are we making a change?”.
As the team continues their season with a 10-4 record Webb leaves a few words of wisdom for those seeking to make a change.” Anyone reading this who cares to make a difference please come see me, in the guidance office at the end of the hall, or join our Peer Outreach.”
