Fall Homecoming. The kickoff to the new year, and first spirit week to take place as the year starts off. The freshmen’s first ever in high school and the seniors first of the last.
Tuesday
The students of GHS walked through the school doors. Looking around at the other students to see just how many of them dressed up, all paying more attention to those in their grade than the others. The spirit of the day being Country vs Country Club. “It feels like it has happened so many times before,” Emma D, a senior, stated. Everyone anxiously waits until the student council makes it through the classes to count the number of students participating. The amount standing never looked as significant as the amount we saw in the morning. After the count, it doesn’t seem to matter who was dressed up or not.
Wednesday
Barbie vs Oppenheimer. A dress-up day first, and an easy scape to get the class points especially if all you have to do is wear pink or normal clothing for either Barbie or a normal person. On the other hand, it was shocking to see the amount of people in pink walking through the halls- a sea of the color. Though “it felt like it was taken from TikTok” to Emma D. The count of points to each class was probably high that day, “everyone seemed so excited to do it in the leading days, it wasn’t shocking to see how many were in pink” Kiley M stated.
Thursday
The day was Rhyme Without Reason, it was something unreasonably hard to think of something for. There were quite a few pairings that had the same themes as well. “It took a lot of thought to come up with something”, Emma L, also a senior, stated about the preparation for the day. It was sometimes hard to tell that some dressed up but at least most put forth the effort.
Friday
Class Colors, the day ideally everyone within the school participates. It is safe to say all but a few truly did. Friday was the day of the assembly. A loud event took place in the gym, which started with sharing all four of the flags, each unique to their class, all done nicely. “As loud as it was, it was fun to watch the different classes match others and even one up each other in the stands”, Kiley M, yet another senior, stated. class dances competed with each other between games, even one that relied on a person from each class capable of using a controller. “No one had any idea what was going on,” Emma D added about the video game section of the Assembly. The amount of excitement in the room is too big for the walls to contain. Some seniors tried to crowd surf others before a teacher promptly stopped them before anyone got hurt.
The dance
The homecoming event most of us were the most excited about, unless you actually understood how American football worked. “I was getting ready two weeks before” announced Emma L. “The gym was really dark” added Kiley M, “yeah you couldn’t see anyone’s faces” continued Emma D. The pizza provided hadn’t lasted the full night and there was always a crowd at the water making it hard to reach but the night was great despite it. Most stayed in the gym with the music but the chance to sit and relax with heeled feet was wonderful for those that don’t wear the type of shoe often. The night went great, with a good ending for the couples that lasted till the end as the dance finished off with a slow song, though “they should do a slow song in the beginning, one in the middle, and one in the end” Kiley M announced.
