When you’re reading a book and you need to tilt your head back and take slow deep breaths to avoid tears falling down your cheeks, you know it’s a good book. When you’re reading in a silent room and a giggle escapes your lips and you clap your hand to your mouth self consciously, you know it’s a good book. So when I tell you “Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell is a fantastical read, I know what I’m talking about. And I can guarantee this beautiful bittersweet book will bring you laughter and tears. In my opinion, any book that makes you feel real emotions is definitely worth reading and it means that it’s so beautifully written, it affects you as if it is real. And if you’re a hopeless romantic who can’t get enough of stories of love, then this is the book for you. Forbidden love? Drama? Young love? Stupid stepparents, young adult troubles? This book has it all.
Eleanor & Park
16 year old Eleanor, hated by her stepfather, and a mother in denial, finds comfort and friendship with a boy from school. After being enemies to lovers, they bond over 80s music and comic books that flourish into a more meaningful connection than just a bus buddy. 16 year old Park, a popular outcast at school, and a disappointment at home, befriends a strange girl on the bus, going from a shaky friendship to something he loves more than anything else in the world. Can these two get through the obstacle in life, the judgment of family, friends, bullies, and felons? Read and find out in the wondrous story of Eleanor &Park.
I highly recommend this fabulous book, not only for its spunk and bittersweet moments, but it’s also not often that I feel such pain and happiness when looking at words. Now I won’t spoil it of course because I truly hope you find it in yourself to indulge in the story of these two misunderstood people and their journey through the far from perfect world that they live in. P.S they have this book in our very own school library at GHS.
