His stomach engulfs itself as it twists and turns, making him feel sick while he walks backwards, the net huddling over his ginger hair. The nerves switch to adrenaline. He gets into his game-ly uninterrupted zone. He jumps and maneuvers himself into positions desperately trying to knock the ball away from the goal.
The game finally ends and the players high-five the losing team, the final score is 9-4. After the line up, the team reviews but after the adrenaline wears off, Big Red can’t seem to remember if he even played. What he does know is that he gave up four points but saved many more.
Sean Cote, but to his coach and teammates he is known as “Big Red.” As a child, his parents wanted him to try all kinds of sports. He has played baseball, basketball, soccer, and even ran cross country for a season. However, over the years only one sport stuck out in the eyes of Big Red, lacrosse. He started lacrosse when was just in the second grade, with Park and Rec and continued through playing with both the school teams and 4 Leaf Lacrosse Club. Sean is now a senior at Goffstown High School and is the varsity lacrosse goalie. Sean decided to play the position of goalie because, “as a kid, I was always picked as the goalie and plus the goalie didn’t have to run up and down the field,” Big Red says.
When discussing Sean’s attitude and success with his coach of four years, Coach Allen, he said, “Big Red has great skill: Sean has great skills because he’s a perfectionist. Through his years of playing, he’s had to perfect his position not only to do well, but because he mentally needs to master every save, every step, every clear, etc. His skills come from years of hard work. …Big Red loves the game and has a great attitude towards the game. His attitude may change if he feels the need to correct any part of his own.”
After graduation, Sean plans on attending Franklin Pierce college, working toward a degree in Political Science. Due in part to positive attitude, determination, and perfectionism (and skill as a goalie) he was awarded an athletic and academic scholarship.
As Sean heads toward his final high school season, he is eager to get out on the field. Other than his weekly trainer sessions, he loves playing for the High School team the best. Sean thinks there is a ton of talent in the incoming freshmen and is looking forward to playing with the team.
