Kyla Pothier is a senior at Goffstown High School. She is a very involved student in our school as the Student Council President, member of the dance program, but she’s better known for her sports photography through her small business Captured by Kyla.
Legally, Kyla’s business started in February 2023, but it’s been in the works for five years. Captured by Kyla has become a website where athletes that she has taken pictures of can go and view her work. Kyla does not only take pictures of sports; she’s done wedding photography and senior portraits for friends. She’s also upgraded to offering “season passes” for athletes who want pictures of themselves without her watermark, making it a small income business, as well.
Kyla has always had an interest in photography. Starting at the age of 12 she found herself filling her storage on her iPod with loads and loads of photos. “I have always had a love for photography…” She says that when she started taking pictures for her brother’s baseball games and people became very interested in her amazing photos, she began to gear her hobby into a gig.
Kyla has always been taking pictures but for the first time in January 2022 she decided to post her work for the athletes. “To be honest, I was terrified to take photos at first. I had no idea how people would react when I posted the photos for the first time.” Kyla explains. She began to go to more home basketball and hockey games to start and the positive feedback and encouragement helped grow Kyla’s passion into a busy schedule.
Now Kyla’s got a full calendar with sports games, working, managing schoolwork in school and online, and not to mention getting her future set up with applying to colleges. As much as Kyla appreciates and loves her role in our sports teams nowadays, she wishes more people knew her life doesn’t consist of just photos. “I work as hard as I can to make sure everything is complete and done in a timely manner.”
Kyla hopes to continue her business and learning of the trade through college. She wants to be able to bring it to a major league sport level and continue to develop her style through her pictures in sports media. Kyla’s biggest advice would be to just go for it! “You never know what will happen when you start.”
