As artificial intelligence grows in, well… intelligence, humans will have to learn to work with their new overlords. Knowing how to use ChatGPT or Google Bard will be just as important as knowing how to use excel or word. Currently schools have yet to teach AI fluency, and I think that should change.
AI models like ChatGPT or Google Bard are excellent tools that are applicable to many situations. Large language models like these are trained on large amounts of different data which gives them a variety of different capabilities including story writing and problem solving. Due to this many schools are unsure on how to proceed.
Currently the GHS doesn’t allow students to access ChatGPT on the school wifi and hasn’t given any official guidance on its uses in the classroom. Some teachers are suggesting using AI as an idea generator while others have yet to use it. I believe that, as an educational community, we should embrace the use of AI.
Since AI models are growing more powerful and accessible every month, it is imperative that students learn how to effectively use them. AI models are similar to a graphing calculator in a lot of ways: both are easily used, but are also capable of a lot more than what the average person will use them for.
Given that some fields, such as programming, have already adopted AI models as a common part of their toolkit, it is obvious that this technology will be important. Teaching students how to use AI models may be hard to figure out in the short run, but the benefits that a tool like AI provide far outweigh the challenges.
