Taking a book out in the library can be complicated and difficult. Going up to the circulation desk and checking a book out with the librarian isn’t always comfortable for all students. That’s why the library added a new self-checkout system. The self-book checkout can be found at the circulation desk. According to the head librarian Mrs. Beauchemin, the system allows students to “check out books or other materials without having to bring them up to the front desk.” However, you can’t renew or return books through this system. When first learning how to use the self-checkout, students can look to the left of the computer for directions or ask the librarian for assistance.
The system was changed a couple of months ago. Originally, all books had to be checked out with a librarian at the circulation desk. This process changed because, “…oftentimes students don’t necessarily want to share the books they’re checking out, or be questioned about it,” Beauchemin explained. The system keeps book checkouts more private and comfortable for the students.
Checking out a book in the library is becoming more common among the school. More students are visiting the library in their free time. According to student Tessa Laurendeau, “…the library is a good source of information… and very helpful.” Laurendeau believes that the library has a great work environment and patient staff. The new check out system makes the library more efficient. Even English teachers bring their classes to the library to look at and check out books.
Even though the self-checkout has been an efficient tool in the library, there have been some minor problems. The scanner constantly turns off, resulting in students having to turn it back on each time. Students who are new with the system might have a difficult time figuring out how to work it. However, when they’re struggling the librarians help guide the students to use it properly. Although it may be unfamiliar at first, Beauchemin believes “…once they learn how to do that, I feel like it’s easy to figure out.”

I check out people all day at my store. If I shop, go up to check out and only find self checkout, my cart is sitting there with everything in it unless they are paying me to be a cashier.
