The end of our first semester is almost over at GHS and one class is ending it off with a competition. Mr. Greenland’s Family and Consumer Science students created both a restaurant and cuisine for the restaurant in a competition that was a “culmination of all their culinary [and] learned skills to prepare an original menu”, according to Mr. Greenland in their Iron Chef challenge.
In this Iron Chef competition each of the five FACS classes splits into five groups of three to four for a total of 25 restaurants. Each group has to create both a restaurant menu and a dish which is judged by a panel of judges.
The students had 4 days to complete their restaurants. The first day students designed the menu for the fictitious restaurant. On day two students ordered the necessary ingredients for their chosen dishes. After which, on the third day students used their learned skills to create the dishes. With the fourth and final day being about the presentation and judging of the meals.
At the end of the four days students were graded on their dish and restaurant. While taste, texture, and presentation of the dish were graded, they were also graded on the theming of their restaurant and food safety.
Mr. Greenland was impressed with this semester’s competition. Some of the more interesting dishes were an avocado tortilla chicken, a basket brunch, smoked salmon, and some crepes. Kirsten Kincaid, one of the iron chefs, made “chocolate chip pancakes with small cookies on the side” in her own words. Along with these dishes, there were several groups that made fabulous chicken tenders.
