In the 2024-2025 school year, there have been a few changes to come with the year, including the now infamous phone lockers. Many teachers have instituted the use of the “phone cubby” or phone locker in an effort to manage phone use in the classroom. Phone lockers have caused lots of mixed opinions between teachers and students.
Teachers argue that phone lockers help minimize distractions in the classroom, allowing students to focus more on their studies. Mrs. Sylvia, a teacher at GHS, believes that removing the temptation to check phones during class has created a more conducive learning environment. She feels that students are too glued to their phones and see it as nothing more than a distraction hindering them from learning. Many teachers share the same opinion, leading them to enforce these rules more than usual.
On the other hand, many students feel that phone lockers are an unnecessary restriction. Hunter Nelson, a senior, expressed his frustration, saying, “I feel that phone lockers are the worst thing this school has ever introduced.” He added to this stating “there are so many things this school could invest in why did we have to waste money on something people are going to hate?” Many students share the same opinion, thinking that phone lockers are an unnecessary burden.
Despite the mixed reactions, Mr. McMurray, Dean of Students, stated he stands by the decision, claiming reduced phone usage can lead to better academic performance. The phone lockers continue to cause controversy among students while teachers believe these are very good to have in the building. As the school year progresses, it will be interesting to see if opinions on phone lockers shift, and if the policy will have the intended positive impact on student learning.
