Returning to your old high school to guide your younger peers sounds like getting a teaching job; however, that isn’t the only reason to come back. On January 9th seven Goffstown High School Alumni from the class of 2024 returned for the NHS-hosted college alumni panel to answer any questions or concerns up and coming high school seniors and juniors may have for college regarding the application process, or anything in between.
National Honors Society vice presidents Peyton Duff and Avery Brisiel, along with the assistance and guidance of NHS advisor Mrs. O’Shea hosted and organized the event which was held in the step room. Together, the vice presidents and Mrs. O’Shea brought back seven alumni. Britney Leclair, Logan Cote, Zach Unger, Lily Koeppel, Jema Penarian, Lil Hazelbaker, and Sam Slack, all of whom gave up their time during winter break to come back and participate in the panel. The alumni were asked questions such as, “How many colleges did you/should I apply to?”, “What application time should I apply during?”, and “What has been most challenging about the switch from dependent to independent life?” The alumni readily and easily answered all and any questions that were posed to them.
For the overall feel of the event, NHS vice president Peyton Duff, “… thought it went well and was happy with the participation from the students who were in attendance,” and who can blame her? The students that were attending asked questions throughout the entirety of the event, leading all the way up to the end of the slotted time block. Mrs. O’Shea also believed that the event went off without a hitch, and that, “… the panelists were well-spoken and had really useful insights about the college process…” She also makes a comment on how she is pleased with the audience participation and their asking so many good questions.
