Bells ringing, people laughing and submit buttons being pressed all around the GHS library. Laughter lingered in the air, as people were hugging and celebrating the result of a day filled with college application submissions.
On Halloween morning, Goffstown High School seniors participated in “Apply NH Day,” a program which waives the application fees to all NH colleges and universities for one day only. A total of 167 seniors attended the event hosted in the library, and 141 seniors submitted one or more applications. In total, 468 applications were submitted, saving Goffstown students $12,000 in fees. Mrs. Fall, a guidance counselor organizes this day. The event requires a significant amount of time setting up tables, timing and planning with all the teachers and scheduling visits with college reps. Physical labor is only a small part of this; Mrs. Fall spends lots of her time organizing and bringing new ideas to GHS to help students pursue better futures.
“It feels so good to help students and give them time to work on this.” says Librarian, Mrs. Beauchemin. She goes on to say how good it feels to give students time and encouragement into college, if that’s the path they choose.
While October 31st is supposed to be a day littered with scares and costumes, this day was rather full of excitement and bright futures. Once finished with the long journey of applications and decisions, when hitting submit you can write your name on a sign and grab a piece of candy. The counselors made various guessing games to apply to scholarships.
Ava Fournier, a senior here says, “I knew I wanted to apply to schools in New Hampshire, I’m excited to extend my academic career” Halloween can be scary as well as the future and applications, “but the time we got to work and the support guidance was so helpful and made the day a little less scary.”
