Sophie Roussel a senior at Goffstown high school and a multi sport athlete, after nine years of hard work and dedication, is set to take her softball career to the next level playing Division 2 softball at Assumption University. She has committed to the Greyhounds softball program, a decision that marks a major milestone in her career. Sophie and her mother, Melanie shared their thoughts on her commitment and recruiting process.
Sophie first fell in love with the sport when she realized the blend of teamwork and competition that softball offers. “I was drawn to softball because of the team dynamic and the thrill of competition,” Sophie explained. “Growing up, my family and coaches encouraged me to play, and I quickly fell in love with the sport’s mix of strategy and skill.”
Her passion only grew as she progressed in her career, especially during her time with the New Hampshire Prospects, which playing at a higher level opened her eyes to collegiate opportunities. “It clicked for me during my early years playing for New Hampshire Prospects. Competing at a higher level made me realize I wanted to continue this passion beyond high school,” Sophie said.
The recruiting process was one of excitement, and also filled with challenges and decisions. Sophie attended multiple showcases, and worked on her athletics and academics, and kept in contact with coaches. She described her experience with the Assumption University coaching staff as positive. “Assumption’s coaches were approachable, which made the decision easier”.
Sophie’s decision to commit to Assumption University came down to more than just softball. “I chose Assumption because of its supportive community, strong academics, and the welcoming culture of the softball program. It felt like the perfect fit both on and off the field,” she said.
Sophie’s mother, Melanie played a crucial role in guiding her through the recruiting process, but always allowed Sophie to make her own decision. “We always said that we wanted her to go where she felt she’d be happiest. After all, it’s her life to live,” Melanie said. She recalled how they attended college prospect camps and clinics together, but emphasized that Sophie took care of emailing coaches and training hard to get noticed.
Melanie had talked about how the most challenging part of the process was the waiting. “It’s a long process with lots of discussions with lots of coaches. The waiting and the unknown is stressful for everyone,” she said. But when Sophie made her decision to commit to Assumption, the family felt a wave of relief. “It was very exciting to see all of her hard work come to fruition. We’re so proud of her.”
Sophie acknowledges that the transition to college softball will come with its own set of challenges, mostly in balancing academics and athletics. “Time management is key,” she said. “Balancing the demands of academics and athletics will be a new challenge, but I’m ready for it.”
Melanie is equally excited about what lies ahead for Sophie. “We really like the coaches and how they run their program. We’ve always believed that spots are earned, and you get what you put into it,” Melanie said. “We’re so excited to see what her future at Assumption holds for her and are so proud of her achievements.”
