The idea of “trunk or treating” is certainly an intriguing idea however, but should it really be a substitute for actual trick or treating? And compared to large scale house decorating it’s much easier and many would say less fun to bedazzle a little trunk instead of your lawn. Trunk or treating, around here anyway, is pretty much people who elaborately dress up their trunks, park in a circle and pass out candy. Many younger generations would upvote this cute little idea, my three younger brothers included. However should we leave it up to them? The Spirit of Halloween, which strangely originates from a combination of all saints day and a celtic festival Samhain, now means candy candy candy and makeup. Or more importantly, dressing up in your most fabulous costume and trudging up and down every road possible to get as much candy as possible with your friends. I, who grew up in Nashua, am very accustomed to this as i lived in a large quiet suburban neighborhood plus my grandmother who lived just over the highway had a similar neighborhood but it was much larger plus her neighbors were less grumpy and handed out full size candy bars. Moving to new Boston was a very interesting transition, but for conversational purposes it was interesting the way we do Halloween around here. In fact, New Boston doesn’t even do our own Halloween! The roads are much too long, and muddy, the trees thick and dark, and despite my love for our pond side house, not a great way to pull pounds of candy. So, as you know, New Boston residents head on down to the center of Goffstown. Don’t get me wrong the center of Goffstown is a very nice spot however it seems like a good half of the trick or treating is out of the back of trunks. Back in Nashua this way of snagging candy was more of a separate festivity, whether it’s at school or a different little event. But now it seems to be substituting real trick or treating? Don’t yell at me but…..back in my day, elementary school actually, I sprained my ankle black and blue the day of Halloween. A lot of people would have sat at home and watched Hocus Pocus but I hobbled on that thing the whole 2 hours to get those darn snickers. Now THAT is Halloween spirit. You can get loads of candy at the store for cheap but the point of trick or treating is doing the work for it. Getting into that fabulous shrek bling, and getting together with all your besties and pan handling all your neighbors. I just simply think doing it out of a bunch of trunks(even bedazzled trunks) in a circle doesn’t feel the same.
Is Trunk or Treating Ruining Halloween?
