GHS students celebrate homecoming by participating in spirit weeks and dress up days to show school spirit. During the week of 10/9 – 10/13 2023. Each day of the week there was a different theme where students were able to dress up with friends or individually. Monday there was no school/Columbus day. On Tuesday the theme is Country vs Country club. On Wednesday it’s Barbie vs Oppenheimer. Thursday’s theme is Rhyme without Reason. Friday – Class Colors Day. Freshman are navy blue, sophomore is pink, juniors are maroon, and seniors are white.
Freshman Reece Still, senior Cassidie Plourde, teacher Mr. Devriendt are all in agreement that Rhyme without Reason is the best spirit day. Devriendt appreciated the fact that a lot of kids were creative and involved with it. Some kids went above and beyond with dressing up. On Friday some students even painted themselves with their class colors, or drew claw marks across their face. Reece Still exclaimed it was fun to see everyone dress up and see what they did.
The seniors were not able to attend a homecoming when they were freshman. Last year students were able to attend homecoming luckily. Plourde stated “It’s a bummer but I’m glad everyone has it now.” Last year was the first year GHS has held homecoming since Covid, making this year the second homecoming since 2020-2021. When the seniors and juniors first came to this school they didn’t have that opportunity. They still had spirit days but it was hard considering everything was hybrid, coming in only a couple days of the week and the rest being remote.
Alumni Devriendts’ most memorable experience of his homecoming week during high school was playing in the football games. Reece Still said she’s most looking forward to “Homecoming, and dressing up.” The dance and football game seem to be a fan favorite. It’s also a great way to bring everyone together, having a shared experience as well as participating in the assembly games and spirit days.
To the freshmen worried and nervous about being new to the high school, get involved. Whether it’s going out on spirit days or playing a sport or participating in a club. The best thing you can do is be involved. You’ll create a better experience for your four years here. Devriendt says, “it’s important to get involved with things bigger than yourself.”
