Winter Carnival which normally takes place the week before February break was moved to a week in the middle of March this year. This extra time gave room for additional planning so the committee and class councils’ visions could come to life. Winter Carnival was an all-week event with dress up days leading up to Friday, the assembly day. With St. Patrick’s Day on Monday, students dressed head to toe in green, and those who didn’t hid with the fear of being pinched. Wearing an all-grey outfit, or groutfit could be the way to go, but others would rather dress to impress on Tuesday. On Wednesday, students got amped up as they wore their beachiest outfits. The theme for Thursday called for everyone’s best jerseys. Parades of navy blue, pink, maroon, and white flooded the gymnasium on Friday’s assembly day.
Each year the assembly is the biggest and loudest event of them all. The assembly consisted of fast-paced games and class lip-sync battles. The assembly games included dodgeball, tug of war, knockout, and Mario Cart. Winners of each game would earn points for their class. The winner of the class lip-sync battles, however, would be determined by a panel of judges. This year, the judges were Ms. Bean, Ms. Gratton, Mr. Bracy, Mr. Cowette, and Mr. Galloway. Ms. Bean, a three-time judge explains that “when you judge, you watch from a different lens” and that when you watch from afar you don’t pay as much attention to the details. Ms. Bean has never judged a class lip-sync battle, however she enjoyed watching “the choreography difficulty increase the older the kids got”.
The night before the assembly, each class had three hours to decorate a section of the 300s wing according to their season. The Freshmen were spring, Sophomores with fall, Juniors had winter, and the Seniors with winter. Ms. Bean explained the fire safety drills the judges had to abide by and that no “more than 50% of the walls could be covered”. Ms. Bean claims that these rules along with having to remain unbiased was the hardest part of being a judge during Winter Carnival. With a tie between the Sophomores and Juniors, the ultimate winner of Winter Carnival was the Sophomore class for their consistent participation in spirit days.
